About Rabbi Sean Gorman

Rabbi Sean Gorman

Rabbi Sean Gorman (Rav Sean) received rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1998.  After graduation, Rav Sean received orders to Pearl Harbor.  He served 4.5 years in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps before detaching to the civilian world.  Since then, Rav Sean officiated at congregations in New York and Toronto, and maintained his connection with the Navy Reserve.  He loves studying parshanut (commentary) and ta’amei mikra (cantillation).  Rav Sean owns three bicycles, and would love nothing more than to follow the Tour de France (women’s or men’s), and then to enjoy a cup coffee and pain au chocolat as soon as the peleton passes.  Rav Sean is married to Rabbi Jennifer Gorman (Rav Jen).  They have two cats and three adult children.

Rabbi Sean Gorman finds Torah everywhere, including in the neckties he wears. A tie with frogs recalls the plagues of Egypt. A train tie evokes Ezekiel’s chariot. A pattern of stars points toward creation, a sukkah roof, or the promise made to Abraham. From the weekly Torah portion to Shabbat and the festivals, each tie opens a door to text, tradition, memory, humor, and meaning.

With warmth, learning, and an occasional unabashed pun, Rav Sean connects ancient words to everyday life. The Rabbi’s Necktie is an accessible companion for longtime students of Torah, synagogue goers, and curious readers seeking a fresh and engaging way into Jewish tradition.
